Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama ending their meeting in New York on Wednesday. Also present were Lavrov, left, and Clinton, right.

President Dmitry Medvedev has hinted that Russia might support U.S.-backed sanctions against Iran and praised President Barack Obama’s administration for its decision to scrap the missile shield plan in Central Europe.

But Medvedev’s apparent willingness to cooperate on Iran, which is being widely interpreted as a Russian concession to the United States, does not mark a departure from Moscow’s previous position on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, defense analysts said Thursday.

“We believe we need to help Iran to take a right decision,” Medvedev said after meeting with Obama on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.

Medvedev said Russia’s position on new sanctions, whic ... Read more »

Mumbai, India's financial capital has become more united against terrorism since 26/11 (the 2008 terror attack in Mumbai), in which 183 people lost their lives and hundreds more were critically wounded. Such terror attacks have also occurred in the past during festival season, and though the main objective of these acts of terror is to disturb peace during the festivals, the festivities of different religions continue in full swing.

Recently, Hindus organized their religious festival Ganesh Pooja with full devotion, while Muslims were busy in their pious month of Ramadan. Preparations are being made to celebrate the famous festivals of Dusshehra, the Durga Pooja and the Eid-Ul-Fitr. While the festivals of different communities in India—the nation of unity in diversity—are associated with their religious importance, these festivals at the same time present an example of co ... In a 12-minute address on audiotape, al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden spoke to the American people on the 8th anniversary of 9/11. The tape was produced by the as-Sahab propaganda arm of the terror group and posted on various jihadist forums last night.

His address (assuming it is his voice on the tape), directed "to the American people," asserted that the main reason for the al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, 2001, was U.S. support for Israel as well as "some other injustices." Interestingly, bin Laden claimed the war between the two "nations" (i.e the American nation and the Islamic "Umma") can stop if the White House eliminates what he called the "Israel lobby." He accused Israel of pushing for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Note that in this speech he did not mention the battlefields of Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia or Chechnya; he targeted only U.S.-Isr ... Read more »

Picture this. A few people are gathered around a food stand in the Palestinian city of Tul Karem waiting to be served. One of them turns around as he is called by name. The minute he does so, confirming his identity, two men standing on each side tie his hands and distance him from the crowd, shoving him into a nearby car. The capture takes less than a minute, and they leave with the wanted person as quickly as possible.

This scene could easily be taken from a typical action movie; however, this is a standard mission operated by "Duvdevan" (cherry in Hebrew), an elite I.D.F. unit. The person taken is a "bad guy" with either Israeli or Palestinian blood on his hands and, once captured, will be interrogated by Israeli security services.

"Many people who served in this unit like to brag about the number of terrorists they have killed, but most of them usually do not tell the t ... Read more »

People raising the sign “No to the Evenka Dam” at a public hearing in Tura in the Krasnoyarsk region. They stalled the dam by declaring the hearing null.

TURA, Krasnoyarsk Region — RusHydro, the state electricity firm reeling after a deadly dam disaster last month, suffered a new blow Tuesday when an ambitious plan to construct a new giant hydropower plant on the Lower Tunguska River stalled amid public protests.

After listening to RusHydro officials present their plans for the Evenkia dam and answer questions for five hours, residents of the town of Tura took the unprecedented step of declaring the public hearing null, citing incomprehensive materials that pointed to lack of research by RusHydro and inadequate evidence of the project’s safety for the environment.

Local officials said Tuesday that they would not sign the procedural documents that are nec ... Read more »

It would be interesting to know if the military’s top brass are drinking champagne as they sit in their offices on Smolenskaya Ploshchad and Arbat, or if they are cursing those cunning Americans for outmaneuvering Moscow. U.S. President Barack Obama announced late last week that he had made the difficult decision to cancel long-standing U.S. plans to deploy elements of a global missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic. The prospect of Washington creating a so-called “third position region” (after California and Alaska) close to Russia’s borders had been a main stumbling block in U.S.-Russian relations for the past several years.

During that time, Russia’s leaders had been screaming at every street corner that the deployment of 10 U.S. interceptor missiles constituted a dire threat to Russia. Efforts by Washington to explain that 10 interceptor missiles could hardl ... Read more »

The day after President Dmitry Medvedev’s article “Go Russia!” appeared, I stopped by a little restaurant I know in the center of Moscow. The owner of the establishment had also read Medvedev’s article. Her gut reaction was, “Rather than compose articles, the president should read the laws that he signs.”

I discovered this restaurant during the peak of the 1998 crisis. For some inexplicable reason, its prices remained lower than at neighboring establishments, and the food was always tasty. Not long after, I learned that the owner and I had attended the same school as teenagers, and ever since, I have taken as much pleasure from her success as if it had been my own. Whenever I’m in the area, I always drop in to get a taste of what small business owners are thinking.

The day after Medvedev’s article came out, I found the owner in a bad mood following another hassle with bureaucrats.

“Medvedev deserves a statue in his honor,” she said. “After his call to of ... Read more »

President Dmitry Medvedev will address the UN General Assembly on reforms to international relations, discuss how to end the crisis with leaders of the world’s leading 20 economies, and sit down with heads of state during a visit to the United States this week.

But Medvedev should remember that his country is nowhere near to being the superpower of Soviet days and lags far behind other countries in terms of importance on global financial markets, analysts said Monday.

On a related matter, a Kremlin spokesman said Monday that the president had to cancel a planned meeting with U.S. dissidents because of time constraints.

“Sadly, it was simply impossible to set up such an event within the president’s tight schedule here,” Kremlin spokesman Alexei Pavlov told The Moscow Times by telephone from New York.

Medvedev caused a minor stir last week when he told Western experts on Russia in the Valdai Club that he wanted to speak to dissident ... Read more »

As President Dmitry Medvedev prepares to attend the United Nations General Assembly and the G20 summit in the United States this week, he has an important opportunity to demonstrate a cooperative, forward-looking Russian role on several key issues. The timing could not be more critical. There are a number of converging challenges in Russia’s relationship with the West that urgently need attention from both sides, even though U.S. Vice President Joe Biden’s declaration last year that it was time to push the “reset” button on U.S.-Russian relations has been followed by progress on Strategic Arm Reduction Treaty negotiations and U.S. President Barack Obama’s decision last week to ditch a European missile defense shield.

Iran is the most pressing matter for the West and Russia. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s assertion on Sept. 10 that “the sanctions under discussion … are not a mechanism to force Iran to cooperate” reflects continued Russian skeptici ... Read more »
