Thousands flood National Mall in D.C. to protest against President Obama's agenda in 9-12 project

WASHINGTON - Tens of thousands of people thronged to the National Mall Saturday, propelled by the belief that President Obama will do evil, deny care to the elderly and destroy the Constitution and country.

"It's not that he's evil," said Suzanne Mullen, of Fayetteville, N.C., "but the outcome will be."

"What he's doing to the budget, and taking over health care, is only a part of it," said Richie Mitzner, a Bronx native who lives in Fort Lee, N.J. "He's bankrupting us. He's not protecting us. He's apologizing to Europe and the terrorists."

The massive outpouring of distrust was part of an event called the 9-12 Project, promoted heavily by Fox News host Glenn Beck, as well as the promoters of last spring's anti-tax tea parties and the GOP-allied FreedomWorks.

Organizers who took to the stage repeated over and over the idea was to show Washington and the media that opponents of the President and his policies were not just a few kooks, but a massive movement of decent people afraid for the future.

"We've got a deficit so large, my grandkids won't be able to pay it off," said Pete Jones, of New Hartford, Conn.

He claimed Obama would like to take away Americans' guns, and that his bailouts and push to "commandeer the health industry" clearly are not part of the Constitution.

Jones insisted Congress must get rid of laws that interfere with people's rights.

"They're either going to write the right things, to get rid of all these damn laws, or we'll come back down here, and we're not gonna be carrying signs," Jones warned.

"It's got to be constitutional," chimed in Robert Croke of Southbury, Conn.

And the demonstrators don't buy arguments that health care reform is not about tax hikes, government control or rationing.

"If I'm 62 and I have heart problems or I have cancer, well, then I'm not gonna get treated because they'd rather treat someone who's 15 years old - I'm pretty much done with," said Joe Marchese, 45, a Brooklynite who lives in Bethlehem, Pa.
