Lockerbie bomber's release was 'completely crazy,' says mayor of London Boris Johnson

The outspoken Mayor of London - who's in town to lure New Yorkers to his home turf - joined the fray Sunday over the Lockerbie bomber's controversial release, calling it a "betrayal" and "completely crazy."

"Had I been in charge, I would not have released him. It seems to be completely crazy," said Boris Johnson.

"It's a complete mockery of justice. It's a betrayal of the victims of the Lockerbie Bomber."

Johnson's remarks come as the U.S.-British "special relationship" remains in the deep freeze over last month's decision by Scottish ministers to free convicted Pan Am 103 bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi.

British officials insist he was released on humanitarian grounds because he is dying of cancer - but critics charge it was linked to an oil deal with Libya.

President Obama last week told British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in a telephone call it was a mistake.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has called for sanctions if the allegations turn out to be true.

Johnson, a member of the opposition Conservative Party, called the decision a black eye for Brown's Labor government.

"It's the single most disreputable and mysterious episode in this government's recent history - and that's in a fairly hotly contested field," he scoffed.

Megrahi was the only man convicted in the 1988 plane bombing that killed 270 people, mostly Americans, over the Scottish town of Lockerbie.

Johnson is in town through Tuesday to help unveil a major push to keep American tourist dollars flooding into London - including a swap that will put London ads on New York buses and vice versa.

British tourism officials said the recession has cut back on American visits, though the weakened pound has meant tourists drop more cash.
