Half of the infants in the developed world, will live to 100 years, billions for the development of medicine
I am confident that thanks to new grants, millions of Americans still alive, as well as future generations will live longer without suffering from the disease. As President Obama will focus on studies of cancer and HIV.

More than half of infants who are born today in the developed world, will live to 100 years, say European scientists.

The study, published in the medical journal Lancet, concluded that over the past 50 years, residents of 30 developed countries were twice as likely to cross the line for 80 years.

In 1950, the probability of living to the age of 80-90 years accounted for an average of 15-16% for women and 12% - for men. In 2002 this figure was already 37% for women and 25% for men.

Scientists emphasize that in the 1920's the main factor that increased life expectancy, has become a successful fight against infant mortality. After this, Western countries have made significant progress in the maintenance of life of older people - it has become most apparent in the 1970's.

According to the head of research group Kaare Christensen of the University of Southern Denmark, the average life expectancy has been growing since 1840, and there are no signs of slowing down this process.

"Young old age"

"The linear increase in people's lives for more than 165 years does not give grounds to speak about approaching the limit of life expectancy, - said Christensen. - If life was approaching the limit has already happened to some slowdown in growth.

Nowadays, the elderly are much healthier than in past years

According to scientists, now in a person's life can be distinguished from three to four main phases: childhood, adulthood, "young old age" and "old age".

In this case there is no evidence that the "old men" less healthy than the "young old" - in part due to the fact that people with poor health die earlier and to a ripe old age (after 85 years), only the strongest survive.

Danish scientists say that 30 to 40% of people aged from 92 to 100 years are able to manage without outside help. A study of American longevity record-setting (from 110 to 119 years) showed that even in this age 40% only partially needed help, or do without it.

According to Christensen, the centenarians of Great Britain and other developed countries acquire a disability at all later stages of life. At the same time, strangely enough, the number of chronic diseases is increasing.

Prevention

The reason for this trend - improving prevention and diagnosis of various diseases, including - most dangerous of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

"The increasing number of old and very old people will be a great challenge for health systems - says Christensen. - But the findings suggest that people not only are living longer than ever before, they last longer do without disability and have fewer functional limitations. "

"We are not only adds years to life, - says another researcher - Britain's Alan Maron-Davis. - We also bring life to our years. "

The U.S. administration has allocated $ 5 billion on medical research and development of new technologies to detect and treat disease.

As President Obama will focus on studies of cancer and HIV.

In the case of its implementation, this program will be the largest in the history of one-time infusion of funding in medical research.

The announcement by Barack Obama in one of the units of the National Institute of Health in the suburbs of Washington, was a welcome to many.

First of all, it celebrated scientists, who now have a unique opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research, not considering the financial cost.

According to prognoses, this program gives many Americans hope for a life without diseases that have become a scourge of modern times.

"I am confident that thanks to new grants, millions of Americans still alive, as well as future generations will live longer without suffering from disease", - noted the director of the National Institutes of Health, Francis Collins.

To better understand cancer

The new funds will start financing the project, during which will be collected and studied more than 20 thousand samples of tissue - in order to explore the DNA of more than 20 types of cancer. And this, in turn, will provide an opportunity to better understand and treat this disease

Barack Obama

Money for health research allocates funds from the stimulus package of measures to support the economy, which has to date highlight the economic program of President Obama.

The total size of this package is 787 billion dollars.

At earmarked for medical research $ 5 billion will be financed by 12 thousand medical research grants in various fields. A billion dollars should go for genetic cancer research.

According to Barack Obama's choice of priorities in the allocation of grants was a simple task.

"In the field of cancer we are successfully moving in the direction of genetic research. Treatment of cancer begins to be based on an understanding of genetic changes, which often provoke the disease, and those reasons that make some of us are more prone to cancer. While we are at the beginning of these studies, "- said the U.S. president.

"We are just beginning to understand the relationship between environment and changes in the body that encourage the development of cancer - told Obama. - New tools will start financing the project, during which will be collected and studied more than 20 thousand samples of tissue - in order to explore the DNA of more than 20 types of cancer. And this, in turn, will provide an opportunity to better understand and treat this disease. "

Frensiz Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health

In addition to cancer research will also be funded work in the field of vaccines against AIDS and the virus H1N1, as well as studies of cardiac and mental illness.

Speaking at the National Institutes of Health, President Obama stressed that in addition to future humanitarian, the allocation of additional funding for health programs and will bring immediate utilitarian value.

"These investments will help create new jobs. Tens of thousands of new jobs for scientists, manufacturers of medical equipment and medicines for those who build and upgrade labs across America "- summed up the U.S. president.

Speech by Barack Obama's audience, which consisted mainly of scientists of the Institute of Health, not once interrupted by applause.

Institute Director Francis Collins, half jokingly half seriously called the U.S. president "supreme zdravoohranitelem", by analogy with the commander in chief.

According to experts, on Wednesday gave the official start of the program that "will change the history of medical research in America."
